The Overhill Experience

What is Heritage Tourism?

The Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association defines heritage tourism as "showcasing what is unique and special about McMinn, Monroe and Polk counties in ways that are agreeable to the residents."

How does the heritage/tourism movement affect McMinn, Monroe & Polk Counties?

Heritage, or cultural tourism is an important trend in tourism today.  As "baby boomers" mature, it is expected that this trend will continue, sesulting in increased interest in visiting historic sites and museums, attending cultural events, dining on regional cuisine, enjoying natural areas, and participating in learning experiences.  This area, with its museums, performance and exhibit venues, historic sites, scenery, and large areas of public lands with outdoor recreational opportunities, is very well positioned to take advantage of this trend.  Since 1990, when the region was selected as a national and state heritage tourism pilot area, the Tennessee Overhill Heritage Association has been working to develop a heritage tourism program to capture this segment of the tourism market.  This regional program has been recognized nationally as a success.
