Kayaking 101 5-21

Kayaking 101 – Saturday, May 21 at Hiwassee/Ocoee State Park (10:00am to 4:00pm).

Summer is right around the corner and if you feel the river calling your name this might just be the class for you!  If you have been watching as paddle sports have grown in popularity over the past few years, Hiwassee/Ocoee State Park and the Tennessee Valley Canoe Club are teaming up to get you off of the sidelines and into the game.  We are offering two separate 1 day classes for you to come and familiarize yourself with this amazing way to navigate our waterways.  The cost is $10.00 per person and we are limited to 10 slots per class so sign up now!  So if you are new to paddling, looking to meet paddling friends or are interested but hesitant, please contact us with any questions.  All types of kayaks are welcome and the plan is to teach you how to get the most out of them.  Below is a short list of the types of things that will be covered in the class

  1. Basic paddle strokes and current entry
  2. What equipment you should carry
  3. How to properly carry & transport your boat
  4. How to get in your boat properly
  5. How to empty a swamped boat properly
  6. Basic water reading techniques
  7. River obstacle avoidance techniques

What to bring:

  • Life Jacket
  • Paddle
  • Boat
  • Helmet
  • Water
  • Lunch and snacks

What to wear:  Keep in mind we will be paddling on the river and we may get out and work on a skill, such as wading, as we go down the river.  You will get wet.  Quick drying fabrics and shorts are better for the Hiwassee than cotton clothing…which will just keep you wet and cold all day.  Please do not wear flip flops.  Closed-toe river shoes or sneakers are ok.

Meet at Gee Creek Boat Ramp   423-263-0050
