Introduction to Backpacking (Class 1)

Introduction to Backpacking (Class 1) – Thursday, Feb. 3 at Hiwassee/Ocoee State Park (7pm to 8:15pm).  Cost is $15   423-263-0050

Hiwassee/Ocoee Rivers State Park is offering (3) different classes to prepare you for successful backcountry backpacking. On the fourth and final class we will conduct a free overnight trip led by seasoned backpacker and 2018 Appalachian Trail thru-hiker, Ranger Jeremy Sorensen.

The classes will be held on the following dates and will cover the following topics:

Thursday, 2/3/2022 or on 2/24/2022

(Mandatory to attend this class once for the Free Overnight Trip)

  • Backpacking Basics: An Overview
  • The BIG 3 (Shelter, Sleep & Pack Systems)
  • How to choose and organize your pack
  • Proper clothing, footwear & gear

  • How to hang & secure your bear bag
  • Water Filtration
  • Trail Hygiene

Thursday 2/17/2022

  • Healthy Parks Heathy Person (Personal Fitness)
  • Basic Survival: An Overview
  • Trip Planning
  • Navigation & Map Reading

Saturday 2/26/2022 (3.5 hours Intensive Course)

  • All prior topics will be covered during this class
  • This class satisfies the mandatory attendance for the Free Overnight Trip

Saturday & Sunday 3/5/2022-3/6/2022 or on 4/2/2022-4/3/2022 (Pending Weather)

  • We will conduct an overnight guided backpacking trip! This excursion will consist of approximately (10 miles) of moderate hiking total. This is the perfect opportunity to test out your winter gear in backcountry conditions. The pre-determined location will be announced on 3/31/2021 at class and it will be delivered via phone and email.
